- W1972790147 abstract "A B S T R A C T Experiments were designed to study the effect of temperature on interpopulation crosses of Gonjum pectorale. Both interpopulation and intrapopulation crosses were made at 10, 15, 20 and 25 C. Of the 34 populations studied, one-third were definitely affected by temperature, showing that temperature is one factor in sexual isolation in at least some populations. Only two populations were completely incompatible with others. In some populations with both mating types, one mating type (the one designated minus) was found to be more compatible, possibly reflecting further genetic difference between mating types. PREVIOUS STUDIES on Gonium pectorale (Stein, 1958) suggested that sexual populations were sexually isolated. In later studies (Stein, 1965) with populations from several different regions, sexual isolation was shown to be less extensive. In the latter paper, growth and mating were tested only at 15 and 20 C. Although most interpopulation crosses occurred at both temperatures, temperature appeared to have a selective effect on mating in some crosses. It was postulated that temperature was one factor responsible for the apparent sexual isolation because populations are generally collected in areas with temperatures ranging from 12-21 C. To test the hypothesis, an investigation of the effect of temperature on interpopulation crosses was undertaken and the results are reported here.
