- W1972800044 abstract "Abstract Until now, research on speaker attitude in Japanese has largely approached style-shift as an independent entity from the use of interactional particles. Through examination of novelised television drama, this study investigates the use of interactional particles such as yo and ne at points of shift between desu/masu and da verb forms in order to initiate a new direction in research on the framework for expressing modality in Japanese. The instances of style-shift are examined according to the ‘awareness of thou ’ model proposed by Maynard (1991, 1993), Ikuta's (1983) theory of ‘attitudinal distance’, and Brown and Levinson's (1987) positive/negative politeness and the backgrounding/subordinating of information principle proposed by Maynard (1991, 1993) and Ikuta (1983). Use of interactional particles are analysed according to Kamio's (1979, 1994, 1995) Theory of Territory of Information and Maynard's (1993) theory of Relative Information Accessibility and/or Possessorship. This study suggests that instances of style-shift considered to be motivated by ‘awareness of thou ’ or ‘attitudinal distance’ are characterised by a lack of interactional particles, and those motivated by negative politeness, by particles which provide the hearer with options: the option to respond, to agree, etc. Occasionally style-shift appears to be motivated by a conflict between the preferred style and the particle chosen." @default.
