- W1972801763 abstract "In western Canada, the use of band and nest placement to reduce nitrogen (N) losses of fall-applied fertilizer has been previously investigated on conventional tillage but not on zero tillage. Consequently, we undertook experiments on zero ttillage to compare yield, N use efficiency, N uptake and percent recovery of applied N with broadcasting, banding and nesting of urea applied in the fall. The field experiment was conducted for 5 years at Rimbey (north-central Alberta) and another for 4 years at Innisfail (central Alberta). The crop was spring-sown barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. ‘Galt’) and rate of urea was 50 kg N ha−1. Fall-applied N treatments were: broadcasting; banding with 22.5-cm and with 45-cm row spacing; nesting of 1-g pellet centered in 30-by 30-cm area; and nesting of 2-g pellet centereds in 40- by 45-cm area. Spring-applied N treatments were broadcasting and 22.5-cm banding. Among the fall treatments, broadcasting gave the least N uptake and percent recovery of applied N of barley at both locations, but the Rimbey site also gave the least yield and N use efficiency. Bands placed in rows 22.5-cm apart imprved the efficiency of fall-applied N markedly. Spring-applied N on conventional tillage out-yielded zero tillage in all cases. Results indicated that efficiency of fall-applied N under zero tillage can be improved by placing N fertilizer in bands or nests." @default.
