The observer first set a monochromatic light to threshold, then the experimenter reduced this by some fixed proportion to a subthreshold intensity. A second monochromatic light was then added to the subthreshold field, and the amount needed (in threshold units) to bring the mixture to threshold was noted. Ten wavelengths were used, and three trained observers. Marked failures of additivity, and also inhibitory effects, were observed. For example, for each subject, the energy of a green light which had to be added to a red subthreshold field to bring the mixture to threshold was realiably greater than the energy required to bring the green to threshold when no mixing was involved.
