- W1973004197 abstract "956 The Powerbelt (PB) is an exercise device designed to provide additional arm resistance during exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if using the PB could increase the intensity of walking and running. Twelve volunteers (6M and 6F) between the ages of 20 and 50 years served as subjects. Each subject completed six trials (normal walking, walking with raised arms, base unit of the PB, and Levels 1-3 of the PB) while walking and running. The walking and running trials were completed on separate days and the conditions were randomized within each day. Each condition was 3 minutes long with 3 minutes of rest between conditions. VO2 (ml/kg/min) and HR were measured continuously and recorded every minute. Responses were similar for M and F, thus mean responses are presented below. TableTableUsing an exaggerated arm swing (raised arms) during walking and running significantly increased the intensity of exercise. Use of the PB further increased these responses. For walking, these increases were as much as 64%(PB3) greater than normal walking. For running, these increases were as high as 23% (PB3) greater. Differences between walking and running probably are related to 1) the absolute intensity of the respective activities (running being much higher, thus subjects had less room for improvement), and 2) the added arm swing used during running may negate some of the benefit of using the PB. In summary, the use of a PB during walking and running can significantly increase the intensity of the activity and may result in added benefits." @default.
