Early Government officers reported a trembling, degenerative disease called kuru by the Fore. In 1957 Vin Zigas and Carleton Gajdusek made the first scientific descriptions of the course of kuru. The question of who should conduct research into the disease was complicated by the location, and nationalities and personalities. The rights of the Fore were at risk, particularly when some scientists said contact between the Fore and the outside world must end. Bob and Shirley Glasse advanced research when they suggested that cannibalism was the means of transmission.
