- W1973137972 abstract "The idea of sovereignty has been heavily debated in the past few decades, with positions generally oscillating between two poles. There are those who believe that globalization has resulted in the redundancy of sovereignty in the form of the nation state with the extension of transnationalism and capitalism, while others have suggested that there has been a reassertion of sovereignty rather than its demise, as states hold onto power via the regulation of their borders and internal population. Unsurprisingly, both positions have some degree of truth to them with the forces of capitalism, war and migration among other things, requiring the constant reiteration of sovereign power. Either way, at stake is the relationship between humans, citizens, lands, resources and authority. ‘Sovereignty’, however, is something that is surely undergoing yet another set of transformations in the context of climate change (both conceptual/theoretical and practical). The non-human or more-than-human is asserting itself into discussion of sovereignty and authority. How are we to theorize this? Via the stirrings of some strange questions, such as ‘Does the climate have a stake in sovereignty?’ and, perhaps less strange, ‘How do we think the relationship between climate change, sovereignty, and disruption?’ this paper will provide a preliminary discussion of the relationship between materiality and sovereignty. The aim of this discussion is twofold: first, to begin to articulate the dynamics of this pairing in the era of climate change and, second, to evaluate the usefulness of new materialism, particularly Jane Bennett's work, for our theorizations of sovereignty." @default.
