- W1973149415 abstract "The heat capacity of the layer compound methylammonium cadmium tetrachloride, (CH3NH3)2CdCl4, has been measured from 2.3 to 301 K, primarily to provide a diamagnetic reference in analysing the heat capacity of paramagnetic salts of the same type. The temperature range covered, however, includes two of the three transitions which were already known to occur in this salt and which are of considerable intrinsic interest. These two are the IV-to-III: monoclinic to tetragonal transition, and the III-to-II: tetragonal to orthorhombic transition. Neither of these manifested itself in the Cp measurements as an essentially first-order change. The IV-to-III transition was found to be rather similar to a two-dimensional cooperative orderdisorder change. Our estimate of the entropy of transition ΔSt is 10.8 J K−1 mol−1 (or R ln 3.67). The maximum in the heat capacity occurs at 164.2 K. The III-to-II transition appeared as slightly high heat capacities over a range of about 15 K, the estimate of ΔSt being very small (0.24 J K−1 mol−1). The values of ΔSt for these two transitions are briefly considered in the light of a recent theory of the phase changes in this salt. Estimates have also been made of the parameter α which determines the temperature dependence of ΔCp in the neighbourhood of the critical temperature Tc of the IV-to-III transition, where ΔCp = Cp(experimental) − Cp(baseline), and ΔCpT ≈ |1 − TTc|−α. The values of α are rather high: α′ = 0.95 for T < Tc, and α = 0.74 for T > Tc." @default.
