- W1973281631 abstract "ALTHOUGH bound in hell, Satan is nevertheless able to send an emissary whose sole task consists in seducing Adam and Eve so that they trespass against God's command. The emissary's arrival on earth is described as follows: He þa geferde þurh feondes cræft oððæt he Adam on eorðrice, godes handgesceaft, gearone funde, wislice geworht, and his wif somed, freo fægroste, swa hie fela cuðon godes gegearwigean, þa him to gingran self metod mancynnes mearcode selfa. (Genesis B, lines 453–9)1 OE geworht, the past participle of OE wyrcan ‘work, create’ (<Gmc. *wurk-ijan-), is the phonologically regular continuation of Gmc. *wurh-ta-. But syntactically the half-line wislice geworht in Genesis B presents a serious problem, as Timmer points out: ‘One would expect geworhtne’.3 It so happens that the morphologically regular accusative singular geworhtne of the past participle belonging to wyrcan is attested four times in Genesis B: ænne hæfde he swa swiðne geworhtne (line 252b), hæfde he hine swa hwitne geworhtne (line 254b), þær he hæfð mon geworhtne (line 395b), and hæfst þe wið drihten dyrne geworhtne (line 507a). Therefore Timmer's observation is fully justified. If we want wislice geworht to refer to Adam we are forced to emend to wislice geworhtne, but it would certainly be very hard to defend this violent change. On the other hand it seems practically impossible to interpret geworht in line 456a as the masculine accusative singular of the past participle belonging to wyrcan. The syntax of the quoted passage requires an analysis." @default.
