- W1973487013 abstract "It is pointed out that the derivation of the Glauber shadow formula for high-energy scattering by deuterons employs the static approximation, in which the nucleons of the deuteron are regarded as fixed in position during the scattering process. An alternative shadow formula which does not involve this approximation is obtained, starting from the double scattering terms of an exact multiple scattering expansion and retaining only certain intermediate states. The new result differs from the standard Glauber formula by the replacement of the parameter <r-2>, the mean inverse square of the deuteron radius, by another quantity defined in terms of an integral over the deuteron form factor. The relationship between the two results is studied, and it is shown that the difference between them may be significant at all energies. Although certain arguments can be advanced in favour of each of the two versions of the shadow formula, it is suggested that, at least at moderate energies, the new result may be the more accurate one. The analysis of the three-body problem is also extended to deuteron-deuteron scattering." @default.
