Measurements obtained during the summer drought in 1976 enabled the influence of soil-moisture and vapour-pressure deficits to be determined over an exceptional range. The experimental results were consistent with model predictions and confirmed that: (a) surface resistance, rs, is insensitive to soil-moisture deficits (up to values in excess of 200 mm — equivalent to a soil tension of 6 bar); (b) winter transpiration rates are small (0.03 ± 0.02 mm day−1 during December 1976); and (c) the relation rs∝ 1(1−0.45 δe) where ϵe is vapour-pressure deficit in kPa) is viable over the extended range of climatological variables encountered. Model predictions are also shown to be consistent with independent “tree cutting” experiments." @default.
