- W1973845038 abstract "C-reactive protein (CRP), a novel marker of chronic subclinical inflammation, has been established as an important measure for determining CVD risk. CRP has also been associated with several CVD risk factors, including sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and the metabolic syndrome (MetS). No studies to date have looked at the association between CRP, CRF, and the MetS in a multi-ethnic low SES population. PURPOSE: To determine if CRP levels vary by ethnicity, as well as to determine if CRP is associated with CRF and the MetS, among a group of low SES status non- Hispanic white (NHW) males and females. METHODS: Cross-sectional associations between CRP, CRF, and the MetS were examined among 123 non-Hispanic white and Hispanic subjects (63% female, 32% Hispanic) from a low SES background with at least three risk factors for cardiovascular disease. CRP was determined using a high sensitivity assay, CRF was determined using the Balke protocol, and subjects were considered to have the MetS if they met the National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP/ATP III) criteria. RESULTS: Geometric mean hs-CRP levels were not significantly different between male and females or between Hispanics and NHW after controlling for age and BMI. In both ethnic groups those in the two lowest CRF quartiles had higher hs-CRP levels (NHW: 2.28 mg/L and 2.44 mg/L; Hispanic: 2.47 mg/L and 3.59mg/L) than those with the two highest CRF quartiles (NHW: 1.21 mg/L and 1.76mg/L; Hispanic: 1.31 mg/L and 1.75 mg/L), though hs-CRP differences between CRF categories were not significant. A non-significant linear trend was noted between hs-CRP and increasing number of metabolic syndrome components in both groups. Hs-CRP was significantly different in NWHs with zero components of the MetS (1.08 mg/L; 95%CI, 0.65 to 1.77) and those with 3+ components of the MetS (2.74 mg/L; 95% CI, 1.82 to 4.13). CONCLUSION: In low SES NHWs and Hispanics, evidence of an association between CRP and CRF and the MetS was found. The weaker association between CRP, CRF and the MetS in this low SES group, as compared to those from a higher SES background, may be due to the homogeneity of the low SES population." @default.
