- W1973906343 abstract "Abstract Dialect interference has been conceptualized as the effects of the sounds, syntax and semantics of one linguistic code on the acquisition of competence in a different linguistic code. The aim of this study was to determine whether dialect interference differentially affects a specified group of bilingual children who face difficulties in reading Standard English texts in relation to reading accuracy and comprehension. The New MacMillan Reading Analysis test was administered individually to 48 children with reading difficulties attending the same schools and belonging to two cultural groups. The sample was stratified by cultural group (British Pakistani vs. ethnic majority peers), sex (equal representation of boys and girls) and age (8‐9 years, 10‐11 years), and was randomly selected from three multiracial primary schools in an industrial conurbation. Parallel forms of the reading tests were presented in three contrasting modes: listening, reading silently and using the prescribed instructions. Mode and order of presentation were randomized. The British Pakistani pupils outperformed ethnic majority pupils in reading accuracy. Older children were better readers than younger ones but no significant sex difference was detected. In terms of comprehension, the findings that emerged were as follows: (i) from highest to lowest, the mean rank order was British Pakistani boys, ethnic majority girls, British Pakistani girls, ethnic majority boys; (ii) children seemed to comprehend better when they read text aloud or listened, rather than when they read silently; and (iii) older children comprehended better than younger ones. In conclusion, no adverse dialect interference effects were apparent in this particular sample of bilingual children with reading difficulties. Reasons for this result are considered and lines for future research are indicated." @default.
