- W1974100679 abstract "The origin of no other medieval Russian city has aroused such lengthy discussion as of Novgorod. This may be explained, in our view, by a number of factors. These include, first of all, the place Novgorod occupies in Russian history. Second, the oldest Russian Primary Chronicle [Povest' vremennykh let] contains two mutually exclusive versions of the city's origins. According to one of them, Novgorod was founded by Riurik, while according to the second, it was founded by Slavs who came to the north from the Dnepr River valley and then invited Riurik to come to the already established city.
