- W1974158576 abstract "Abstract The major applications of Quaternary palynology were evident, at least implicitly, by 40 years ago in the work of Von Post, Jessen, Firbas, Faegri, Iversen and Godwin, to name the European leaders. Subsequently, the centre of greatest activity has shifted to North America and the method has been applied, often with unexpected results, in most parts of the world. Some of its most important applications, e.g. chronostratigraphy, climatic reconstruction, are being superceded by other methods, a tendency which will increasingly restrict Quaternary palynology to plant geography and plant ecology. Lacking the essentials of controlled experimentation, it is important to maximise the value of replication in these applications and to do so in ways thoughtfully selected to match purpose, namely exploration, regional replication or vegetation dynamics. This last is the context of the fastest developing field of Quaternary palynology including fine resolution studies, new statistical methods, automated pollen recognition and the loosening of the strictest uniformitarian shackles. A table of Australian sites is appended." @default.
