- W1974659072 abstract "Abstract Neutron diffraction studies of the Y 6 (Fe 1− x Mn x ) 23 system reveal the presence of substantial preferential atomic ordering of iron and manganese atoms on the four transition metal crystallographic sites. Throughout the entire compositional range, manganese atoms prefer to occupy the f 2 site and iron atoms the f 1 site. Neutron diffraction profile refinements show no long-range magnetic ordering occurring in the compositional range from x = 0.35 to x = 0.75. The average iron moments on each of the sites are reduced in the iron-rich ternaries and remain ferromagnetically coupled. The manganese atoms are nonmagnetic. In the manganese-rich ternaries the iron atoms have no spontaneous moments and the manganese magnetic moments are decreased dramatically from their values in Y 6 Mn 23 . In the 0.35 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.75 range detailed scans reveal broadened low intensity peaks at the (100) and (300) forbidden lattice reflections, indicating weak short-range (about 30 A) antiferromagnetic cluster spin ordering. No ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic clusters were observed in this region from small angle neutron scattering studies." @default.
