- W1975371934 abstract "Abstracto1.The bactericidal properties of the coelomic fluids of three polychaetes, Neoamphitrite figulus, (Dalyell) Arenicola marina (L.), and Nereis diversicolor (O. F. Muller) have been examined by incubation-inhibition tests mainly using the bacteria E. coli K12, Micrococcus lysodeikticus and two strains isolated in this laboratory: “SW A” and Arenicola-Y.2.The body fluids are not generally bactericidal nor was any bactericidal activity induced by killed bacteria injected in vivo.3.The lysosomal enzymes acid phosphatase and lysozyme occur in variable amounts in the coelomic fluid and in the coelomocytes of all three species. No significant change in enzyme activity was found following injection of bacteria.4.In N. diversicolor acid phosphatase activity was found to increase in coelomic fluid when cells and fluid were incubated in vitro with killed bacteria.5.In N. diversicolor histochemically demonstrable acid phosphatase also rises after 6 hr when incubated in vitro with killed bacteria.6.It is concluded that while the response to infection is too low to be demonstratable by incubation-inhibition and the values of acid phosphatase and lysozyme are individually too variable to show a statistically significant change in N. diversicolor, at least, the activity of acid phosphatase in cells and fluid is enhanced as a result of bacterial infection. Acid phosphatase and lysozyme may act as opsonins.
