- W1975415243 abstract "SUMMARY The fern genus Actiniopteris is studied from the taxonomical point of view. It is regarded by some authors as a «genus incertae sedis». It belongs to the order of the Pteridales. A comparison with other genera of this order has shown that it is nearer to the Cryptogrammaeeae than to any other family. However, its distinctive features are so important as to justify its classification as a new independent family which is described under the name of ACTI- NIOPTERIDACEAE. Two species were originally assigned to Actiniopteris: A. radiata and A. australis. The former is selected as type of the genus. In modern times Actiniopteris has been regarded as monotypic, but a study of more than 500 specimens has shown that five species may be kept distinct. Two of them are those originally referred to the genus by LINK. Three are described as new species. Thus the genus is regarded as consisting of A. radiata, A. di- morpha, A. pauciloba, A. semiflabellata and A. australis. The differences between them are based chiefly on the habit of the frond when it becomes dry, the lenght of the stipe in comparison with the lamina, the shape and symmetry of the lamina, the number of the dichotomies and the lenght of their branches, and the number, shape and apex of the segments. These characteristics recur in the five species as a series of parallel sequences which probably reflects the steps in the phyletic elaboration of foliar structure of Actiniopteris. The genus is distributed from Nepal, India and Ceylon throughout south-western Asia and Tropical and South Africa as far as the Cape Verde Islands, Angola, S. W. Africa, Transvaal and Malagassia. The five species are taken into consideration separately; the type, the synonyms, the specimens examined, the illustrations, the geographical distribution and additional notes are given for each of them. Latin descriptions are given for the new family and new species. A. radiata is the most widely distributed species in the genus. The specimen collected in India by Koenig in Stockholm herbarium is selected as its lectotype. The species is represented in all herbaria and it is well known for its characteristic broadly flabellate fronds. A. dimorpha is a new species distributed through Tropical East Africa and Malagassia. It is characterized by the dimorphism of its fronds. A. pauciloba represents a second new species characterized by the number of its segments being reduced to 8 or 4. It occurs in Angola and Rhodesia. A. semiflabellata is the third new species, which is found in the majority of herbaria. It occurs in Arabia, in Tropical and Subtropical East Africa and Malagassia. The asymmetric semiflabellate fronds and the rather long branches of the first dichotomy are the most remarkable features of the species. A. australis, described by the younger LINNE, is endemic in the Islands of Mauritius and Réunion. The lamina with edges forming a very narrow angle, the long asymmetrical branches of the dichotomies, the stipe as long as the lamina make it a very distinct species. The following taxa are proposed as new: Actiniopteridaceae, fam. nov., Actiniopteris Dimorpha sp. nov., Actiniopteris pauciloba sp. nov., Actiniopteris semiflabpllata sp. nov." @default.
