- W1975516653 abstract "The large size of the cannula inserted into the artery may have predisposed to fistula formation. The tract may have been completed by the cannula transgressing the IJV before entering the artery during the first cannulation attempt, or at subsequent successful IJV cannulation. Turbulent flow and the hypercoagulability of pregnancy increased the risk of thromboembolism. The risk of fistula formation after IJV cannulation may be reduced by use of ultrasound to aid vessel identification; transducing intraluminal pressure of vessels before dilation to prevent arterial cannulation; and abandoning further attempts at venous cannulation at a site if arterial puncture occurs with a large gauge needle or cannula. It has been recommended that large cannulae or needles inadvertently inserted into arteries be left in situ for consideration of surgical closure of the arteriotomy. Neurological symptoms of a CCA-IJV fistula have been reported, but these are rare and previously have not been described after IJV cannulation. Patients in whom puncture of the carotid artery has occurred, or in whom difficulties in cannulation were experienced, should be followed up, because early closure of fistulae may reduce the risk of complications such as stroke." @default.
