- W1975662955 abstract "Crises for people with dementia can impair quality of life and lead to admissions to hospital or nursing homes but little is known about their causes or the best ways to manage them. This study used a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods including using focus groups, a national survey and a discrete choice experiment to compare the perspectives of people with dementia, family carers and healthcare professionals on causes of crises and crisis interventions. In the focus groups study there were differing views between staff, carers and people with dementia about the causes of crises and the best way to manage them. People with dementia and their carers favoured less intensive interventions whereas staff often thought that regular home support and emergency support could be valuable. The national survey showed the wide variety of causes of crises and the differences between carers and staff in their views not only of the causes of crises but also of the things which could either help prevent crises or help people with dementia and their cares cope during a crisis. The Discrete Choice Experiments showed that when faced with a preference base approach to considering cases of crisis, staff and carers had views which were much more similar than expected. The views of people with dementia and carers need to be carefully considered when understanding the causes of crisis but even more so when looking at the best ways to help. Staff working in dementia care need to be aware that their own views may be different from what people with dementia and their carers really want." @default.
