- W1975717571 abstract "SUMMARY Since previous findings suggest that the production and secretion of elastolytic enzymes by the pancreas are under endocrine control, the activity of elastoproteinase and the elastomucases Em-I and Em-S in the pancreas was determined in two groups of 19-month-old female rats. The first group of 12 animals was hypophysectomized at the age of 9 months, the second group of nine rats served as controls. The enzyme activities were measured using as substrates: unstained alkali-treated elastin and unstained and orcein-stained acid-treated elastin. Thus, data could be obtained for both the Em-I and Em-S activities. Hypophysectomy decreased the level of pancreatic elastoproteinase and increased the total activity of both elastomucases. Further, it was found that the elastin content in heart, lung and aorta of the hypophysectomized rats was increased as compared with that in the controls." @default.
