- W1975755263 abstract "Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and the less frequent hepatocellular adenoma are two different benign liver tumours with a predominance in women. In FNH spontaneous rupture rarely occurs and malignant transformation is unlikely. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with FNH are observed and to operate if tumour-related symptoms develop. By contrast, patients with adenoma should have surgery because of the considerable risk of intraperitoneal haemorrhage and development of hepatocellular carcinoma. 1 Nagorney DM Benign hepatic tumors: focal nodular hyperplasia and hepatocellular adenoma. World J Surg. 1997; 21: 983-991 Crossref PubMed Scopus (229) Google Scholar For both tumours, an association with use of oral contraceptives has been discussed. Because of reports about tumour regression after discontinuation, there is agreement that patients with FNH should stop oral contraceptives. 1 Nagorney DM Benign hepatic tumors: focal nodular hyperplasia and hepatocellular adenoma.
