- W1975764763 abstract "Introduction: Evidence to support the use of new technologies such as CE in patient care accumulates incrementally over time. Deciding when sufficient evidence has accumulated to incorporate new technologies into clinical practice is challenging for both clinicians and policymakers. Thus, standardized evidence grading systems have been developed to assist in this task. Methods: We performed a systematic literature review to identify relevant articles concerning the use of CE in suspected CD. MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE Trials, BIOSIS, and ISI searches were performed through November 2008. Using the identified articles, we then evaluated the quality and strength of evidence for CE in suspected CD using the six most accepted evidence grading systems: American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (ANHMRC), Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM), Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), US Task Force on Community Preventive Services (USTFCPS), and US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Results: A total of 891 citations were identified. 778 studies (87%) involved human subjects. Among human studies, 61 (7.8%) were designated as clinical trials, 13 were designated as randomized controlled trials and 4 were designated meta-analyses. We chose to review full reports and did not include published abstracts. The resultant search yielded 24 evaluable publications. Results for the six most cited of the 24 studies are shown (Table). The quality of the publications was determined to be relatively high per the six evidence grading systems. Conclusion: There appears to be sufficient evidence supporting the incorporation of CE into clinical practice for the evaluation of suspected small bowel CD. Clinicians and policymakers now have compelling evidence to make informed decisions for CE use in this patient population.
