- W1975794002 abstract "Abstract The distinction between lithospheric and asthenospheric parts of the suboceanic upper mantle is well understood. The velocity and anelasticity of the asthenosphere are readily determined to be less than that of the overlying lithosphere. We therefore use similar criteria to define the less well understood continental lithosphere. A simple conductive cooling model is consistent with seismological results for oceanic regions, but the generation of continental plates does not appear to be related to any single process. Stable shields, aseismic platforms, rift zones or basins, mountain regions and subduction zones all have different deep structure, and there is no simple model which explains trends in thickness — even within a given region. Various seismological techniques have been used to determine the structure of the continental lithosphere: these include refraction profiles, surface waves, anelasticity, body waves and travel-time anomalies. In a few cases similar results come from independent techniques, but in others the estimates are in controversy. A few generaliztions can be made: Basins, rift valleys and alpine regions all have resasonablu well developed low velocity zones (LVZ) beginning at depths less than 100 km. Aseismic platforms may have LVZ's, but in some regions (e.g., eastern Australia) the implications from different studies are inconsistent. Results from Precambrian shield regions indicate that subcrustal velocities are high, and that if an LVZ exists, it is at most a moderate one starting at a depth possibly much greater than 100 km. Japan has an anomalous structure; the subcrustal velocites are low and show no decrease with depth, but a Q reversal at about 65 km may indicate the base of the continental lithosphere. The results for shield regions and for Japan raise questions concerning the validity of the assumption that the LVZ always represents the asthenosphere." @default.
