- W1975892012 abstract "Abstract An experiment was conducted at two farms (A and B) to determine whether familiarization by sheep with molasses-urea blocks in the pre-weaning period would improve the ingestion of blocks during two later periods. The responses were compared with those of lambs offered hay or no supplement in the pre-weaning period. The preweaning treatments lasted for 12–14 weeks, after which the lambs were grazed together, without supplementation, for 9–10 weeks, and then the groups were re-constituted and offered molasses-urea blocks for three weeks; because of poor pasture availability, hay was also offered during this period. The sheep were then grazed together, without supplementation, for a further 42 weeks, and the groups were re-constituted and offered molasses-urea blocks for another three weeks. Responses were assessed in terms of block intakes and the numbers of sheep consuming the blocks. At both farms, the sheep that had been offered molasses-urea blocks pre-weaning ingested more of the blocks in the two subsequent periods than those initially offered hay or no supplement. At Farm B, the responses to early familiarization with blocks were favourable in spite of the fact that none of the lambs, or their dams, consumed any of the blocks in the pre-weaning period. At both farms, the sheep that had not been offered any supplement pre-weaning showed little or no interest in the blocks in the subsequent periods. The responses of the sheep that had been offered hay pre-weaning differed between farms. At Farm A, the intakes of this group were intermediate between those that had been offered molasses-urea blocks initially and those that had been offered no supplement. At Farm B, there was no intake of blocks by the sheep that had been offered hay in the pre-weaning period. It is concluded that offering molasses-urea blocks in the pre-weaning period had a marked beneficial effect when blocks were re-offered in subsequent periods. Apparently, familiarization by sight and/or smell was sufficient to induce acceptance of the blocks in subsequent periods." @default.
