• W1976064326 abstract "Abstract It is shown that a Bogoliubov quasiparticle in a superconductor undergoes a trembling motion ( Zitterbewegung ) similar to that undergone by a relativistic quantum particle. The velocity operator of a quasiparticle is exhibited as the sum of a mean velocity operator - representing the “average” motion of the quasiparticle - and a second term representing a rapidly oscillating motion over distances of the order of the coherence length Ξ 0 = ( v F /πΔ) ≈ 10 -4 cm. The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is applied to exhibit the parallel decomposition of the position operator x into a mean position part X and an oscillatory Zitterbewegung contribution x - X . The mean position operator is shown to be an integral operator in x space with a kernel X ( x - x' that tends rapidly to zero for separations | x - x' | greater than the coherence length Ξ 0 . The physical interpretation of Zitterbewegung within the framework of the many-particle theory is discussed. It is shown that Zitterbewegung reflects the impossibilities of localizing a single quasiparticle within a region of dimensions less than ≈ 10 -4 cm. A measurement of position with an accuracy greater than this limit will necessarily create additional quasiparticles and quasiholes thereby destroying the single-particle character of the state." @default.
