The RNA from the thermophiles had a consistently higher G+C content and a larger G+CA+U ratio than that of the mesophiles. The RNA from the thermophiles was more stable to denaturation by heat or urea than the RNA from the mesophiles. The Tm values (temperature at the midpoint of the transition between 25° and 92.5°) obtained from thermal denaturation profiles were about 70° for the RNA from the thermophiles and about 65° for the RNA from the mesophiles, and they correlated with the maximum growth temperatures of the organisms. In all cases, essentially the same type of nucleotide map was obtained upon digestion of the RNA with ribonuclease. The significance of these results is discussed." @default.
