Wave packets can be used to represent wave‐equation derived common‐image gathers as well as provide geometrical information that can be further utilized in “ray”‐geometrical analysis, which is exploited, here, in the context of reflection tomography. We propose a new semblance critérium for the common‐image gathers based on the orientation of wave packets (as an alternative to the residual moveout).
