- W1976617192 abstract "Developmental interactions were studied in the laboratory between Encyrtus saliens Prinsloo & Annecke (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and its two host species, Pulvinariella mesembryanthemi (Vallot) and Pulvinaria delottoi Gill (Homoptera: Coccidae) on Carpobrotus sp. (Aizoaceae). Parasitization affected mortality and movement of the hosts on the plant at low temperatures. The lower developmental threshold of hosts compared to parasitoids allowed hosts held at ≤ 17 °C to reach a critical developmental point for control of the interaction and suppress development of E. saliens and continue normal development to ovisac.P. delottoi was considered to be a less suitable host for development and maintenance of parasitoid populations than P. mesembryanthemi because (a) development in P. delottoi required more thermal units, although the threshold was the same in both hosts; (b) from the same initial host size, P. delottoi grew less than P. mesembryanthemi during parasitoid development and thus provided less resource for the developing parasitoid, which emerged smaller; (c) for the same final host size, female parasitoids emerging from P. delottoi were smaller; (d) parasitoid fecundity was linearly related to female size and females reared from P. delottoi were less fecund because they were smaller; (e) although the same size range of both host species was accepted for oviposition, female eggs were laid at a lower rate in the small P. delottoi and at a higher rate in the large P. delottoi compared to P. mesembryanthemi.RESUMEInteractions entre hotes et parasitoides et valeurs relatives de deux especes de cochenilles comme hotes d'Encyrtus saliensL'etude a porte sur les interactions pendant le developpement de l'hymenoptere encyrtidae, Encyrtus saliens, et deux de ses hotes, homopteres coccidae, Pulvinariella mesembryanthemi Vallot et Pulvinaria delottoi Gill se developpant sur Carpobrotus sp. (Aizoaceae). Le parasitisme modifie la mortalite et les mouvements des hotes sur la plante aux faibles temperatures. Le seuil de developpement des hotes a ete inferieur a celui des parasitoides. A des temperatures < a 17 °C, leur developpement critique leur a permis de dominer les interactions, avec l'arret du developpement de E. saliens et de poursuivre ainsi la croissance normale jusqu'a l'ovisac. P. delottoi est considere comme un hote favorisant moins que P. mesembryanthemi le developpement et la perennite des populations du parasitoide parce que:a) le developpement de P. delottoi a demande plus d'unites thermiques, bien que les seuils aient ete les memes pour les deux hotes;b) pour des hotes de meme taille initiale, P. delottoi croit moins que P. mesembryanthemi pendant le developpement due parasitoide et lui fournit ainsi moins de ressources, ce qui a donne des encyrtides de taille plus reduite lors de l'emergence;c) pour des hotes de meme taille finale, les femelles de E. saliens provenant de P. delottoi etaient plus petites;d) comme la relation entre la fecondite et la taille de ces encyrtides etait lineaire, la fecondite de E. saliens etait plus faible;e) bien que les hotes des deux especes convenant a la ponte aient eu les memes variations de tailles, les femelles d'E. saliens ont moins pondu dans les petits P. delottoi que dans les petits P. mesembryanthemum, et plus dans les gros P. delottoi que dans les gros P. mesembryanthemum." @default.
