- W1976669458 abstract "ABSTRACT The use of the matched filter to automatically estimate the pose of a Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite from imagery measured with an adaptive optics telescope is explored. The satellite pose estimation problem is studied for a broad range of atmospheric turbulence levels and target visual magnitudes. Several algorithms which use varioustypes of image preprocessing are examined in an effort to determine the performance bounds on the matched filterfor this application. Results presented here show that under normal imaging conditions, the matched filter approachproposed can be expected to yield correct pose estimations in over 80% of the trials considered. Additionally, it isshown that a significant portion of errors are between two poses that are very similar in appearance, such as viewsof the target about an axis of symmetry. When symmetry-based errors are allowed, correct pose estimations areobtained in over 90% of the cases tested. 1 Introduction Even with the use of adaptive optics, the problem of estimating the 3-D orientation, or pose, of a satellite from a2-D image measured at a ground based observatory is complicated by the facts that atmospheric turbulence blursthe images, and the objects are exceedingly dim.
