They may achieve this in several ways: With projected operation costs of lightweight UAV’s about 10% of the cost of piloted aircraft, the opportunity arises to collect magnetic and other geophysical data at line spacings far closer than ever economic in the past . The climb rate of an autonomous aerosonde, designed to replace meteorological balloons, is greater than most commercial aircraft, and the constant terrain clearance desired in draped flying may be significantly improved. With programmable GPS navigation it should be possible to contour fly areas of rugged topography, achieving a constant terrain clearance currently only attempted by helicopter borne surveys. Third, the safety of extended low altitude surveys over water where pilot fatigue is a major source of concern can be addressed. Fourth, the potential for flights at an altitude as littler as 10 or 20m implies that data may be collected close too the detail of ground surveys. In areas where extensive maghemite development prevents acquisition of useful ground magnetics data , the sys tem may potentially be flown at any desired altitude in say the 10 to 80m range." @default.
