- W1976760266 abstract "Abstract Greater use of the sea as a source of food can certainly help mitigate, if not totally avert, the ever worsening food crisis instigated by the rapid growth of the world population and its dwindling food supply. But at present only six of the 150‐odd nations are responsible for more than one‐half of the total world catch of fisheries. This has been the case because of an outmoded theory devised in the seventeenth century, accepted in the nineteenth, and being practiced to this day. Absolute freedom of the sea and laissez faire in the ocean have led to ruthless exploitation and destruction of worldwide fisheries. Recently, however, states have come to acquire control over a 200‐mile coastal zone where more than 90 percent of the fish are caught. Despite some apprehensions by a few critics of the new emerging law, the yield of the world's fisheries has increased since the general extension of coastal state jurisdiction in 1975 and has encouraged collaboration and cooperation between coastal and distant‐water fishing states as evidenced by more than 150 bilateral agreements. With the acceptance of coastal states as masters in their own houses, the long period of conflict may give place to a new time of cooperation." @default.
