It begins by outlining the fundamental political and theoretical assumptions underpinning the realist approach to ethics, arguing that realist theory is based on three core principles: prudence, scepticism, and reciprocity. Drawing on the political philosophy of Michael Oakeshott, Reinhold Niebuhr, E. H. Carr, and Hans Morgenthau, the article argues that the belief in universally valid ethical and political principles found in liberal and cosmopolitan approaches to international politics risks conflating particularist interests with universalist claims, and generating foreign and security policies based on a moral crusades rather than a hard-headed calculation of national interests. For realists, the multiplicity of political communities and rival conceptions of the ‘good life’ inherent in the anarchic structure of international politics necessitates an ethical approach rooted in communitarian political theory. The article concludes by outlining a realist response to some of the major ethical questions raised by the ‘war on terror’. Este artículo plantea el caso de que la teoría realista internacional provee firmes fundamentos teóricos y conceptuales para pensar éticamente sobre la ‘guerra contra el terror’. Comienza describiendo las premisas fundamentales políticas y teóricas que respaldan el enfoque realista de la ética, sosteniendo que la teoría realista tiene como base tres principios fundamentales: la prudencia, el escepticismo y la reciprocidad. En base a la filosofía política de Michael Oakeshott, Reinhold Niebuhr, E. H. Carr, y Hans Morgenthau, el artículo propone que la creencia en los principios éticos universalmente válidos y políticos, fundados en enfoques liberales y cosmopolitas de riesgos políticos internacionales combinando intereses particularistas con demandas universalistas y generando políticas extranjeras y de seguridad con base a cruzadas morales en vez de un cálculo intransigente de intereses nacionales. Para los realistas, la multiplicidad de comunidades políticas y concepciones rivales de la ‘buena vida’ inherente a la estructura anárquica de políticas internacionales necesita un enfoque ético con raíces en una teoría política comunitaria.
