From an angular dependence study of the longitudinal relaxation rates in the smectic B phase, we extracted the frequency and temperature dependences of the individual spectral densities of motion Jp(ω) for p = 0, 1, 2. Although the “rotational diffusion in a cone” model was successfully used in an earlier study to account for the behavior of Jp(pω0) in the nematic phase, it is shown to be inappropriate in the smectic B phase since internal ring rotation appears to play a significant role in spin relaxation in this phase. A qualitative picture for the ring rotation in the smectic B phase is given in terms of restricted rotational diffusion of a symmetric top in a strong collision model. More theoretical work is needed to understand the “disordered” smectic phases where the aniline deuterons have contributions to their spectral densities from both the end-to-end molecular reorientation and internal rotation. Although the angular dependence study of relaxation rates may be carried out in the smectic G phase, we have not made an extensive study.
