- W1977042186 abstract "Father Richard Neuhaus' last book, American Babylon, is a sparkling manuscript that explains the meaning of exile for Americans. Offering a distinctly Christian perspective that reflects his Lutheran background, his conversion to Catholicism, and his scholarly gifts, Father Neuhaus explores the possibility of moral progress, questions whether an atheist can be a good citizen, and plumbs the depths of the age of irony. Concentrating on both politics and the notion of hope, Neuhaus advances the thesis that America is Babylon, not by comparison with other societies, but by comparison with that radically new order sought by all who know love's grief and refuse to settle for both a community that is less than truth and a justice that is compromised. Still, he concedes that American citizens are prone to mistake the United States for a destination that is capable of fulfilling their deepest desires. Meditating on the nation's tendency to see American progress as a desirable objective that responds to our sense of exile, Neuhaus cultivates skepticism about the idea of historical progress and particularly moral progress, when that idea defies or denies the limits of history upon which our humanity depends. Such skepticism operates in sharp contrast to the views that have been reified by modern liberalism. Neuhaus' perspective recalls Alasdair McIntyre's analysis showing that both modern liberalism and modern liberal countries represent the debris fashioned by the fragmentation of the philosophical and cultural history of the West. Coincident with this move, the West rejected both the possibility of revelation and the necessity of creating a community composed of shared values tied to tradition, which ensured the secularization of public discourse. Neuhaus shows that these maneuvers attained their apotheosis in the highly influential ideals of America's leading liberal ironist, Richard Rorty. Neuhaus justifies this focus by asserting that many Americans who have never heard of Rorty live their lives in the mode of liberal ironism, which Rorty depicts with chilling candor. In Rorty's hands, redemption, if it can be found, consists of finding one's final vocabulary because that is our only source of hope in a contingent universe." @default.
