Most of these patients die within a year of diagnosis in the terminal phase of the illness, with stupor, inanition, and dehydration. These symptoms are usually believed to arise from debility and malnutrition associated with carcinoma. On occasion, they can be secondary to a reversible superimposed metabolic complication, such as hypercalcemia. The association of hypercalcemia with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus has been reported infrequently.
