- W1977321600 abstract "Photo-polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a model compound initiated by ketone-amine (2-iso-propylthioxanthone, ITX and triethylamine, TEA) and two photo-fragmenting initiators (an alkoxyacetophenone and a hydroxyalkylacetophenone) were carried out in the presence of photo-stabilizers of three kinds. Addition of a light absorber (hydroxy benztriazole) decreased the rate of polymerization and increased the molecular weight. The ITX/TEA was less affected than the photo-fragmenting initiators because it absorbs light at longer wavelengths. A nickel (II) chelate increased the molecular weight because of its light absorption. The molecular weight distribution became narrower when the nickel chelate was added to the photo-fragmenting initiators, partly because it may quench secondary reactions of triplet excited acetophenone groups. The nickel chelate cannot quench ITX. A hindered amine light stabilizer had only a minor effect on the photo-polymerization of de-aerated methyl methacrylate." @default.
