- W1977397763 abstract "Abstract The results of a stereo-electroencephalographic study of some rhinencephalic structures in 12 epileptics are reported. 1. 1. The rhinencephalic structures in man do not exhibit any characteristic pattern of spontaneous electrical activity. The reactivity of these structures to exteroceptive and psychic stimulation is very poor. 2. 2. The modifications induced in the rhinencephalic structures by intravevous injections of Pentothal are roughly similar to those induced in other cortical and subcortical structures. 3. 3. The implantation of depth electrodes in the amygdala and Ammon's horn causes an “injury discharge” which consists of bursts of very fast high voltage waves, lasting generally not more than 15 sec and very similar to the after-discharges set up, in the same structures, by electrical stimulation. 4. 4. The amygdala, Ammon's horn and gyrus hippocampi in man display a very low threshold for electrical after-discharge. The after-discharge set up by stimulation of any one of the three structures always involves all of them as if they constituted, from an electrophysiological point of view, a functional unit. 5. 5. The pattern of the after-discharge is identical in Ammon's horn and gyrus hippocampi and strictly resembles that recorded in laboratory animals. In the amygdala the after-discharge exhibits some peculiar characteristics which would suggest that it represents a projected activity from the gyrus hippocampi and Ammon's horn. 6. 6. The propagation of rhinencephalic after-discharge in man takes place mainly in the direction of the central gray masses; the temporal tip may be sometimes involved. Propagation of the rhinencephalic after-discharge to the homologous structures of the contralateral hemisphere is exceptional in man. 7. 7. The rhinencephalic after-discharge in a patient awake does not cause any modification of the electrocorticogram; during light barbiturate sleep it induces bilateral widespread flattening of the electrical cortical activity and sometimes activation of the cortical spindles. 8. 8. The rhinencephalic after-discharge in our cases was generally unaccompanied by clinical symptoms; electrical stimulation of the amygdala and Ammon's horn caused slight vegetative changes." @default.
