- W1977544462 abstract "Theuseofsocialmediahasexpandedrapidlyinmanyfields, including urology. A recent survey conducted by theAmerican Urological Association (AUA) revealed that themajority (74%) of urologists reported using some type ofsocial media [1]. Although the most common platform wasFacebook, used by 89% of faculty members and 98% ofresidents surveyed, perhaps the most exciting for cliniciansis Twitter [1]. This microblogging service, used by morethan one-third of AUA members surveyed, allows real-timediscussions between individuals about topics of mutualinterest.Twitterentries,knownastweets,arelimitedto140characters, ensuring that each message is succinct and thatconversations occur at pace. Members can choose to‘‘follow’’ other Twitter users and particular topics, whichare indexed using hashtags (eg, the symbol #prostatecancercan be used as a search term for tweets related to prostatecancer). As such, users build a customized stream or feedcontaining only the tweets from the individuals or on thetopics selected. Because Twitter allows filtering of contentstreams and dialogue moves at speed, it is an excellentvehicle for rapid and targeted acquisition of (urologic)literature and news. Because of the inherent nature of thismicroblogging service, content feeds are timely and oftencontextualized by key opinion leaders in the field.Therehasbeenwell-documentedexpansionoftheuseofTwitter to discuss proceedings at urology conferences overthe past year [1,2]. Twitter can offer an ‘‘augmented’’experienceformeetingsbyallowingparticipantstofindoutwhat is happening in multiple simultaneous sessions orread commentary from others about the proceedings.Furthermore, Twitter allows users to follow meetingproceedings remotely when unable to attend [3], perhapsoffering a future glimpse of remote conference attendance.Content streams from each meeting can be filtered usingdesignated hashtags. For instance, one can easily reviewhappenings at the recent Genitourinary Cancer SymposiumoftheAmericanSocietyofClinicalOncologybyenteringthehashtag #gu14 into the Twitter search bar. For the 2014European Association of Urology Congress, use the hashtag#eau14.In this month’s issue of European Urology, Thangasamyet al. [4] describe a novel application of Twitter in our field:the International Urology Journal Club. Through thisexpanded application of technology, a journal club is nolongerconfinedtoaparticularinstitution, group, orphysicalspace. The Twitter journal club includes participants fromall around the world, potentially enabling more expansivediscussion of a particular subject. Participants includemedical students and department chairs, providing a novelforum for teaching and exchanging ideas. This discussioncan be accessed with the hashtag #urojc, either withinTwitter or through an Internet search. This report provides a proof-of-principle demonstrationthat a diverse, international group of urologic professionals(from all six inhabited continents) spanning all levels oftraining can engage in a lively and vibrant volley of ideassurrounding an academic urologic topic [4]. The authorsreport that each month’s content stream generated by thejournal club received >130 000 impressions. However, thismanuscript is largely descriptive, and the authors forgo anopportunity to assess the actual impact of this journal clubon clinical practice. For instance, it would be valuable tosurvey participants about whether #urojc affects criticaldecision making in the clinics or if participation helps build" @default.
