- W1977827797 abstract "Research in academia as well as in industry is subject to trends and fashions. At a time when biodiversity is a major headline, research diversity is less popular. New technologies, competition between schools of research, and the pressure to focus on a few strong research programmes might be reasons for such trends. When I started in pharmacology 15 years ago, most of the laboratories in this country seemed to study neurotransmitter release. Today it is signal transduction. However, it would be wise to admit that trends can be wrong, and fashionable research activities may not reflect medical needs. For example, research on drugs for infectious diseases is small compared to its medical importance, and in vivo models have been considerably reduced faced by public opposition. In order to cope with future developments it will be important to maintain a certain base of diversity.Pharmacological research is no longer carried out only in classical pharmacological institutions: structural biology has evolved into a large discipline established mostly in central facilities such as Max-Planck Institutes, the search for new drug targets is done in departments ranging from medicine to molecular biology, and the early phase of drug development appears to be shifting towards small biotechnology companies. The future of pharmacology will depend on our ability to integrate the new methodologies, and to use both molecular and the integrative strategies to discover the mechanisms of drug action." @default.
