- W1977847982 abstract "Willocks J, Barr W. Ian Donald. A Memoir. 141 pages. London, UK: RCOG Press, 2004. ISBN 1-904752-00-4. Price: GBP 26.00 The dramatic changes seen in obstetric science in the 20th century reached their high point with the invention of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound in Glasgow in Scotland 40–50 years ago. A technique coming from an entirely different area of sound physics and tested for human use in a limited way in the USA and Europe after the Second World War was with much hard work and ingenuity changed and adopted for use in humans, where it was particularly suitable to obstetrics and gynecology. From this field, it spread to almost any part of medicine to become an indispensable imaging technique. The driving force behind this development was Professor Ian Donald, a man of genius in his teaching and innovative thinking, yet at the same time forceful and sometimes controversial. Two of his former closest collaborators wrote this appealing book about his life and times. The central theme is the invention of ultrasound for human use. This book should be available in all departments and units where obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound is run on the scientific basis to which Professor Donald contributed so much. All the details seem to be there with mention of most of the key persons who worked in or with the Glasgow research team, including the Nordic pioneer, Bertil Sundén from Lund. The only drawback of the book is that at times, it becomes quite focused on local issues in Glasgow and the UK and then uses the particular phrasing that was, and in some ways still is, quite special to life in Scotland and to medicine in the UK. To the undersigned reviewer, who trained and worked in Scotland, this was easy but may not be so for others. However, all the other good parts of the book, including numerous direct quotations from Ian Donald's own writing and speeches, more than make up for this. Here is a well-told tale of a person and his achievements of which the greatest is the one for which his name will never be forgotten: ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology." @default.
