- W1978082609 abstract "Abstract South Africa's higher education system has undergone significant change since the end of apartheid. A central theme in the debates on higher education transformation has been the tension between the global imperatives of development and the need for universities to respond to the legacy of apartheid. This paper explores this tension by considering recent changes in geographical teaching and research. The paper argues that many of the tensions evident in higher education between the global and the local, which are as yet unresolved, find expression within South African geographical scholarship. Keywords: South Africageography educationapartheidgloballocal Notes 1 The terms ‘historically white’ and ‘historically black’ universities are used to recognize the legacy of apartheid in South Africa's higher education structure. 2 Interestingly, and ironically, this is in stark contrast to the situation during the 1980s. In that decade the debates on the decolonization of South African geography were published largely in mainstream Anglo-American journals. 3 Cheryl McEwan's (Citation2000, Citation2001, Citation2005) work on the status of women's rights in post-apartheid South Africa also fits into this mould. In her work on gender in South Africa she argues that it is not only possible to theorize from the South African context, but the lessons of the South African experience hold for other contexts where the state attempts to play a positive role in improving gender relations. She writes that “the experiential base of a country like South Africa, and the ways in which activists and women's organizations are pursuing understanding and effecting greater engagement by women with the state, can contribute a great deal to international feminist debates” (McEwan, Citation2000, p. 82)." @default.
