- W1978200975 abstract "Abstract A critical, comparative study was made of gas-filled proton-recoil spectrometers as applied to measuring neutron spectra in reactors by measuring some responses of different types of counters to monoenergetic neutrons and comparing these with the calculated responses, by measuring reactor spectra with different counter geometries and filling gases, and by unfolding the data with a variety of spectrum-unscrambling codes. Prior to these measurements, supporting measurements were made to determine the effectiveness of γ-ray-background rejection schemes, to optimize the detector resolution, and to measure the time-slewing and the gas-gain versus counter voltage. Measurements of counter response to monoenergetic neutrons were compared to calculated responses for different counter geometries and recoil-proton ranges. These were used to assess electric-field distortion effects for different counter designs, since the wall-and-end effects were found to be calculable to very good accuracy. This study led to the concept of a hybrid counter that is proposed. This design minimizes field-distortion effects by a large factor for the small counters used in measuring reactor spectra. In addition to evaluating counter designs, the response measurements provide accurate, basic data on the relationship between ionization and energy for both the hydrogen and the methane gas fillings. A reactor-core neutron spectrum measured with the 4π proton recoil counter is compared to a time-of-flight measurement of directional flux to illustrate the accuracy of these two complementary methods." @default.
