- W197822510 abstract "SummaryBaculoviruses are insect pathogenic viruses which have received considerable attention because of their potential as environmentally benign biological control agents of insects and as expression systems of eukaryotic genes. A peculiar characteristic of baculoviruses is that their genome can accommodate transposons derived from the insect hosts. So far, a number of different transposons including a gypsy-like retrotransposon, Tcl/mariner-like transposons and other class II transposons have been identified in the genomes of certain baculoviruses. Some of these elements were isolated from plaque morphology nucleopolyhedrovirus mutants in insect cell culture, some were obtained after in vivo infection of larvae by granuloviruses. This puzzling picture of horizontal escape of host transposons into baculovirus genomes provokes questions and speculations about the biological and evolutionary significance of this observation. Baculovirus mutagenesis by transposons may increase the genetic heterogeneity and could foster the flow of genetic information from a host genome into a virus genome. This interaction may also be used as a model to study horizontal transmission of insect transposons and may suggest that baculoviruses are one of the vectors involved in horizontal transposon transfer among insects. Possible consequences of transposon-mutagenesis on genetically engineered baculoviruses will be discussed." @default.
