- W1978239302 abstract "The need for an anechoic tank to be used for ultrasonics in the megacycle range of frequency is reviewed in light of recent developments of wide-angle radiation pattern, high-frequency transducers. A tank using rho-c rubber as an absorbent lining is discussed as a possible means of obtaining an anechoic tank for use at these ultrasonic frequencies. Previous theoretical work on the reflection of ultrasonic waves from attenuating solids indicates that rho-c rubber would attenuate most incident ultrasonic radiation. Experimental determination of the reflection coefficient as a function of angle of incidence for rho-c rubber shows that the theory is essentially correct in predicting a high degree of attenuation for angles of incidence which are not too close to the grazing angle. The anechoic tank is constructed by mounting the rho-c rubber onto sheets of plywood and fastening the plywood to the sides, top, and bottom of a rigid, water-tight tank. By analyzing all possible tangential, axial, and oblique radiation which could be emitted from a spherical ultrasonic source located at one end of the tank, the best positioning of baffles which can intercept unwanted reflections can be determined. The anechoic properties of the tank were observed at frequencies of 2.53 and 7.57 megacycles per second using a transducer that projects an intense but narrow radiation pattern. The method by which a fixed receiver in an anechoic tank can measure the radiation pattern of a transducer is discussed, and an experimentally measured radiation pattern is shown and analyzed." @default.
