For a variety of reasons — not all mentioned in this article — this field of study in sociology had been neglected until in 1936 the then President of the American Sociological Society drew much needed attention to the lack of sociological interest in industry. Since his commentary was made in 1936 interest and research in this field of study have increased considerably. An important factor in this development was the number of empirical investigations made into the amount of pleasure workers found in their work and the social element in efficiency and productivity. Most important were the research and experiments conducted in 1924–1932 by the Hawthorne (Chicago) plant of the Western Electric Company (in America). The work of Elton Mayo and Fritz Roethlisberger, with its recognition of the fact that many of the problems in industry were in fact human problems, brought the worker as a human being into the foreground. An attempt is made to formulate a possible model(s) for the structural functional analysis of modern industry. In Parsonian terms, industry may be taken as a social system, with sub-systems of its own. We consider inter alia, dland, capital, labour and dentrepreneurship as sub-systems of industry. This is not the only possible model to be used in a structural-analysis of modern industry." @default.
