- W1978329565 abstract "ABSTRACT We have investigated the growth of beryllium thin films on a-A12O3, Si(l 1 1), and Ge(1 1 1). In all cases,epitaxial Be films were obtained under the proper conditions. The effects of substrate temperature T on crystallinequality and surface structure were also studied. Samples were analyzed in situ using reflection high energy electrondiffraction and ex situ with ion beam analysis, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and a variety of x-ray diffraction techniques. Studies showed an increase in crystalline quality with increased T, as well as thepresence of a surface superstructure, probably I3x'I3, R30°, for films deposited on Si at T 300 °C and films onGe at T 200 °C. To date, the highest quality Be films are those grown on Ge(l11) at T = 300 °C. 1. INTRODUCTIONHigh quality beryllium thin films are desirable for possible applications in several fields. For example,because of its extremely low absorption in the soft x-ray region,' Be is of great interest to the x-ray opticscommunity. Calculations for multilayer mirrors with Be spacer layers show that they should have very highreflectivities for the wavelength ranges A<44 A and X=1 1 1—200 A.
