- W1978338894 abstract "There is a general acceptance of the negative influence of interparental conflict on children. Over the past 20 years research has amassed abundant evidence that children fare badly in a dysfunctional family? Longitudinal studies have found that the quality of family relationships is closely associated with outcomes for children, regardless of family type? When parents separate, children are exposed to a range of risk factors that can make it harder to preserve good family relationships. Children respond differently according to their age and sex. Fincham & Osborne emphasize the need to evaluate children's responses in the context of their cognitive and emotional development? Wallerstein & Kelly described the varying reactions of children to their parents' divorce at different ages? Young children frequently but inappropriately accept responsibility for their parents' divorce and develop problems associated with guilt. In mid-childhood they may blame one parent, making it difficult for them to maintain relationships with both parents, and adolescents are often angry with parents for failing to resolve their problems without wrecking the family'. Emery has shown that, when exposed to parental conflict, boys are more likely to exhibit aggressive and disruptive behaviour (externalized), whereas girls are more likely to become withdrawn and depressed (internalized), which may be easier to deal with in the short term, but may have an effect on the child's capability to respond to conflict as an adult. 6" @default.
