- W1978352562 abstract "Abstract Thin crystals of potassium chloride of 99.97% purity were grown from the melt. Firstly, immediately after solidification, they were etched thermally at about 1039 °K i.e. 10 °K below the melting point (1049 °K) and were then cooled to room temperature outside in air. In the second experiment the crystals, after being thermally etched at 1039 °K, were quenched to a temperature of 900 °K. At this temperature they were thermally etched again and then allowed to cool down in air to room temperature. In the third experiment crystals after etching at 1039 °K were quenched to 600 °K. Later, they were up-quenched to 1039 °K and reetched thermally before they were allowed to cool down to the room temperature as before. Crystals in all the experiments were examined under an optical Reichert “MeF” microscope. In the first experiment the crystals revealed a pit density of the order of 10 4 /cm 2 . Those in the second experiment revealed larger pits and smaller pits, the former having a density of the order of 10 4 /cm 2 and the latter of 10 6 /cm 2 corresponding to temperatures 1039 °K and 900 °K respectively. Crystals in the third experiment showed a high pit density of the order of 10 7 /cm 2 . The pits are deemed to have been formed at the sites of dislocations as a result of differential thermal evaporation at high temperatures and not as a consequence of vacancy condensation. In order to evaluate the dislocation density at high temperatures, two possible dislocation generating mechanisms, viz . vacancy collapsing disks and thermal stresses, have been discussed. It has been shown that the former mechanism cannot be operative till the crystals are cooled down to a temperature 103 °K below the melting point. Even below this temperature dislocations produced by this mechanism are negligible. It has been explained that the observed pit densities correspond to dislocations introduced due to the thermal stresses obtainable at high temperatures." @default.
