- W1978391105 abstract "The character of the critical zone reflects the effects of weathering and erosion over time. Weathering processes push a weathering front into fresh rock and continually modify material within the critical zone, generating saprolite and soils, while erosion processes mobilize regolith and remove mass. These processes respond to climate, but also to boundary conditions that may be set by processes occurring elsewhere. We use the Boulder Creek Critical Zone Observatory (BcCZO) to illustrate landscape scale linkages driving critical zone evolution through feedbacks that work both upstream and downstream. We focus on: (1) downstream transfer of sediment and water; and (2) changes in river base-level. The essential point is that regions are linked by transfers of mass and by boundary conditions set by external processes. These linkages result in lags in evolution of critical zone profiles in distant parts of watersheds to drivers such as climate and erosion. Thus, history influences the character of the critical zone. Le caractère de la zone critique reflète les effets de l’altération et de l’érosion au fil du temps. Les processus d’altération enfoncent le front d’altération dans la roche fraîche et modifient en continu les matériaux au sein de la zone critique, en donnant naissance à la saprolite et aux sols, tandis que les processus d’érosion mobilisent la régolithe et assurent l’élimination en masse. Ces processus sont une réponse au climat, mais aussi aux conditions limites qui peuvent être mises en place par des processus se développant ailleurs. L’Observatoire de la zone critique de la Boulder Creek a été utilisé pour illustrer les relations échelle–paysage qui régissent l’évolution de la zone critique grâce aux feedbacks qui sont à l’œuvre à l’amont et à l’aval. L’étude a été focalisée sur : (1) le transfert de sédiment et d’eau vers l’aval ; (2) les changements de niveau de base de la rivière. Le point essentiel est que les régions sont reliées par des transferts de masse et par la mise en place de conditions limites par des processus externes. Ces relations résultent en des décalages dans l’évolution des profils de la zone critique, à des distances variables des bassins versants sous l’influence de facteurs tels que le climat et l’érosion.
